“You can tell me anything you want to,” I said gently. “Or you don't have to tell me anything. It's up to you.” I didn't want to push, but I didn't want her to think she had to keep things from me either.

“I just wondered,” she said hesitantly, “if you felt anything last night? Any pain?”

I wasn't sure why she was asking. I hadn't felt anything, so I had assumed that whatever had happened between them hadn't been sexual. But the fact that she was asking now made me doubt that.

“No,” I told her honestly. “Nothing.”
